Chief Commercial Officer - The Sphere
As a 20-year veteran of the telecom industry, Mr. Tolton has thrived in startups as well as the global carrier marketplace by introducing and leveraging new and disruptive technologies. He has used his business and telecom acumen to help companies succeed and drive results. As CCO of The Sphere, John builds go-to market strategies to lead the company in global business development, marketing, and sales.
Prior to The Sphere, John served as Regional Vice President at Telarix, a software solutions and SaaS provider, overseeing the Asia Pacific region. While there, he led a team that expanded revenues and added a significant number of Tier 1 carriers to its customer base.
As one of the early employees of iBasis, he introduced the disruptive technology of the time, VoIP, to Tier 1 carriers as a means to send international calls. By leveraging leading edge OSS/BSS, as Regional VP, Tolton led a diverse team, which contributed to the company’s continued growth and then post-merger with KPN, he managed a portion of the $1.5 billion in revenue.
Previously, as COO of Nextel International’s investment in the Philippines, John was responsible for making the company cash-flow positive within a six-month period and the led a management buyout of the business. During his tenure at Oxley Capital, he also established a pipeline for a mezzanine-level TMT Fund that was highlighted by an investment into and successful exit from Imagi, a CGI company that produced the film Astro Boy in 2009. In his early career, while at International Wireless Communications, Mr. Tolton established the first Joint Venture Company for mobile operations in Indonesia, which included creating the first call center and billing center to support first-time access to phones for subscribers.
Mr. Tolton earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the University of Toronto and a Graduate Diploma from Capilano University’s McRae Institute of International Management – Asia Pacific.
